Good News About CTE

March, 2015 - Heartland Career Center

Shelby Coffelt started high school not knowing how she'd pay for college to become an engineer.   She's now a junior and almost halfway to earning an associate's degree in industrial technology from Ivy Tech Community College.  Shelby is one of 20 students (she's the only girl) in the Integrated Technology Education Program at the Heartland Career Center at Southwood High School.  The Kokomo campus of Ivy Tech received $3.7 million in federal money to expand its career training programs for students to earn a free, two-year degree while still in high school.  Ahead for Shelby is a work-share opportunity with a major manufacturer that could lead to more money to help pay for that engineering degree.
