CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION LEADERSHIP ACADEMY II

Update Feburary 2009

In partnership with the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, Ball State University, Purdue University and Indiana State University, the Indiana Association of Career and Technical Education Districts is pleased to be providing the CTE Leadership Academy II. The primary goal of the Academy is to enable the development of a cadre of future leaders for Career and Technical Education in Indiana. A secondary goal is to provide continuing education opportunities for current CTE administrators through participation in the professional development opportunities.

Participants include CTE Teachers, CTE Administrators, and School Counselors. Twenty-five are participating this year.  All have indicated a commitment to:

- achieve a CTE Director's License.
- be on a degree path to achieve a principal's or superintendent's license 
  (if they do not already have one).
- complete the Director's license within the two-year time frame
  (by August 2009).

A Coordinating Council is used for planning. Members of the Council include Dr. Jim Greenan, Purdue, Dr. Sam Cotton, Ball State, Dr. Jim Smallwood and  Steve McCaskey, Indiana State, Dr. Roberta Jackson, Jackson-Amick Resources, and Mr. Meredith Thompson, Executive Director of IACTED.

Professional Development: In addition to the college coursework, all participants are required to participate on a team to plan and provide a seminar on Key Topics of concern to Career and Technical Education administrators. The Key Topics emphasized are the following:

* Perkins and Career Majors grant development and management
* Utilizing workforce data
* Effective Communication and Public Relations
* Enabling students to achieve Core 40 and Technical Honors Diplomas
* Developing and allocating area school/cooperative budgets
* Effective utilization of advisory committees and business partnerships
* The state and federal legislative process
* Developing and fostering a Vision of Career and Technical Education
   that is leading edge and continually evolving
* Effecting change to implement the Vision at the district, building, and
   classroom level
* School improvement plans, NCA, PL 221, High Schools That Work
* Curriculum development including state standards, academics integrated
   into CTE, instructional strategies to ensure student engagement,
   formative and summative assessment and frequent review of results
* Program Review - Key components of effective CTE programs/classes
* Effective utilization of Data to maximize student achievement and student
   success

*Teacher and Administrator Licensing
* Maximizing dual credit opportunities
* Development of new/revised programming

 

Participants are also encouraged to participate in other professional development activities related to their career goals. A professional development report is submitted each semester. Participation in the national Association for Career and Technical Education annual conference in December and/or ACTE policy seminar in March is highly encouraged. Participants are required to attend the annual Indiana Association of Career and Technical Education Districts workshop in June.

Internships are a part of the CTE Academy.  Examples include:

·          Developing a Teacher-Student mentor program including portfolio development and four scheduled one hour sessions with students including outside speakers.

·          Examine and become familiar with the administrative role of a CTE Director

·          Assisting in the editing and revision of the student and staff handbooks

·          Developing a Career Academy Pilot Program with academic and CTE teachers

·          Developing a pilot for an advanced manufacturing capstone center

·          Incorporating Differentiated Curriculum with Rigor and Relevance

·          Developing and implementing integrated academics in CTE programs

·          Hosting a Women in the Workforce Job Fair
